I know. I could understand the people in A&E not knowing, because they don’t have time to prepare & probably don’t see it much, but that the nurse taking care of him hadn’t even bothered to look it up was really not very impressive.

My sister in law is not a woman who’s easily fobbed off!

@kdfrawg Most of the people looking after him don’t seem to have even heard of PSP. I think the main things we need to address are how severe the pneumonia is, and if they think it’s treatable, what happens about their “nil by mouth” instruction, because he needs to get some nutrition one way or another.

@kdfrawg But they’re often not knowable, so the medics are stuck with telling people averages or nothing at all.

My sister in law has managed to set up an appointment with the consultant, so she & my mother are going in for that this afternoon.

I don’t think you overstep the boundaries — I like to have as much information as possible, and I’ve never seen you say anything that looks as if you’re trying to diagnose on the internet, or interfere with someone’s treatment. It must be quite hard to keep quiet sometimes!

Thanks.

That can’t be at all easy to determine. I’m conscious of that with my sister in law too — that the survival estimate is based on averages and she could live more or less time than that. The oncologist answered her question with the best information available, but there’s a lot of uncertainty in making forecasts for any individual.

Hugs always help. :)
