@skematica Honesty means you have to actually educate patients and doctors in what would help. That means doing the research. Even when there’s no profit in it. Otherwise you’re just using different varieties of dust.

My BMI is 22.3. Even allowing for the fact that BMI is more generous to short people, that’s solidly in the ok band, and it’s not because I’m rigorous. I do pay some attention, but probably no more than you do. My mother barely tops 100 lb these days. She only managed to stay over 110 at times in her life when she ate chips in the staff canteen every day, or something similar. Her idea of lunch out involves chips, bread and butter (if you can’t see your teeth marks in it, there isn’t enough butter), then announcing that she’s too full to manage the side salad.

When I was serving meals over Christmas, I put out the same amount of food for each of us: my 100 lb, 82 year-old mother; my father who’s 6’ plus, probably twice her weight, and for whom picking up food with a spoon is the limit of his physical movement; my 6’ 3” somewhat overweight husband; & me (except when I was wiped out by norovirus).

Oh yes, and some kinds of behaviour have associated health risks. Taking care of yourself is a good idea.

I don’t think the laziness argument is accurate or helpful. I know people who are far less lazy than I am, and who really struggle (and fail) at keeping their weight down. I do better at it, not because I’m less lazy, but because I’m lucky. It isn’t that hard for me. I’d like to lose 3-5 kg, but I don’t pile on an extra 25 kg if I stop paying attention for a while. I really feel strongly that just telling people to stop being weak and lazy is not any kind of answer.

Lots of doctors tell people to lose weight. Telling them isn’t the same as enabling them to do it though.

// @skematica @kdfrawg

@skematica That’s a statement of faith, so I won’t try arguing.

// @kdfrawg

@skematica Sometimes it does. Disease isn’t always a punishment for wilful bad behaviour.

// @kdfrawg

@kdfrawg You chose a good present!

@kdfrawg I mainly measure weight too — because it’s easy. The blood sugar remark was for

Yes, the blood sugar has to be the one you watch.
