@larand I’m afraid it extends to quite a lot of countries.
@matigo I suppose 100 years ago only the rich travelled. Long train journeys would be no problem on the Orient Express. I wouldn’t like to have to go by boat.
@matigo For trips to the south of France, I almost always choose the train. The journey can be done (just) in a single day, or you can set off a bit later, get off-peak rail prices and spend the money you save on staying overnight in Paris. I generally do that on the outward journey and do the return in a single day.
For longer journeys, the convenience of getting there in one day usually wins out, and sometimes for France if money and/or time are particularly tight.
@matigo My switchover comes when the train journey can’t be done in a day. Unless I can stop somewhere nice on the way. In this case that doesn’t work & is also much more expensive.
@kdfrawg Actually, I think I know which flight it has to be. 8am is too early to get to and 7pm gets to Venice too late. There’s one from Gatwick at 1pm which would work. I just need to know if it absolutely has to be the 6am train to get there in time, or if I can leave a little bit later.
