My local repair place did it, and copied the installer onto theHD for me. I made a copy on our NAS before starting the Time Machine transfer.

Stay on Sierra, I think. I tried to install High Sierra several times with no success. At the very least I want to get back to where I was and have a full, recent, bootable backup lined up before I try again!

First job now is to copy the Sierra installer to the NAS, then see if I can restore from the Time Machine backup.
