@jws It means that every ordinary person who updates to High Sierra does it with no way to get back. Seems very odd.

@peemee I think it was partial. I set that when CCC was running, but recently it’s been refusing to copy the OS stuff, so I ended up with bits missing.
I have copies of some previous installers, but not Sierra.

Just bit the bullet and spoke to Apple support. They said I need to download El Capitan from the App Store and install that & that I should then be able to restore from Time Machine. Apparently High Sierra isn’t compatible with my MBP, but it would be nice if it had just popped up a message saying that, rather than wading in and trashing it.
She said Sierra isn’t currently available and she doesn’t know if it will be again, so it looks as if I’ll be staying on El Capitan. Yay. Isn’t it great when things just work?
@matigo I have a High Sierra USB installer, but it won’t work. If only Time Machine could take me back to last week so I could grab Sierra while it was still there!
@matigo That’s the problem. I can set the MBP up with Yosemite but then I can’t restore my Time Machine backup because it’s from a newer OS.
