That’s true, but at least you’re around now, and as long as you can settle his sleeping arrangements, he should be able to last through the night quite soon. The rest of it is easier if you’ve had enough sleep, though having to keep constant watch is still pretty tiring. Your little chap is a bit older than Bembo was though, and small breeds mature faster, so it should get easier very quickly.

@kdfrawg It’s notable that when I do yoga, he’ll choose going in the crate next to me over having the freedom of the rest of the house, or going to sit with Mr I for a while. Of course, flinging himself manically at me is his first choice.

//

The main thing is that even though you’re exhausted, puppies are actually fun, and they grow up fast. You’ll find a way through all the details.

// @kdfrawg

We had planned to use puppy pads, but when we put our scared 8 week old puppy on one, he just trembled and stared at us with an, “I’ll do anything you want, but I don’t know what you want,” expression.

// @kdfrawg

@kdfrawg He mainly uses it for begging: “If I go in here they’ll give me treats!” Then hops out again.

//

@kdfrawg I always feel a bit guilty, but it at least kept him and the house safe. He never treated it as a den, like all the books say.

//

Now he only goes in the crate when I want to do some yoga, because otherwise he goes completely bananas for some reason, and keeps leaping at me and trying to lick my face.

//

Absolutely. Bembo slept in a crate to start with. He was actually clean through the night within a week (by nine weeks old), but took longer than that to learn that the whole of the dining room (where he lived at that stage) was to be clean.

When he reached a year or so old, he told us he didn’t need to be in the crate any more, and would now sleep in our room. Not quite sure how that happened! But by that age it wasn’t a problem. I don’t know how you’d work it with a young puppy!

//

I’m sure the howling will stop once he realises that’s the way things are at night, but if you want to confine him, it may need to be with a door or a crate.

//

Sounds as if that was a good move.
