I think there may be quite a lot of young dogs available for adoption — it’s an age when many people realise they didn’t think it through before getting a puppy. I’ve seen some good advice on things to look for when picking a dog. I’ll see if I can find it.

It’s also very important to pick the right temperament — it’s awfully easy to go for cute, but temperament is more important. Where we live, a dog that didn’t get on well with people and other dogs would be a serious headache. And some dogs have perfectly nice temperaments but need more exercise than we could give them.

Bembo suits us, but he’d be a terrible choice for someone who was out a lot. He doesn’t mind being left on his own once in a while, but he’d hate spending all his days alone.
