Most places in England aren’t very far from a town by car, so the main difference to me is whether you can walk to the shops & restaurants. If you have to get the car out, it doesn’t make that much difference whether it’s 10 minutes or 30.

Even living quite close to town doesn’t help much if it’s not walkable — when my mother in law was staying, I had to drive her around because she couldn’t walk much. A ten minute walk in town took me 45 minutes in the car, because of traffic and one way systems. So the choice for us is town centre (then choosing the size of town) or somewhere green.
